Steam’s payment woes appear to be continuing, as a user has discovered that PayPal no longer supports transactions made in the majority of world currencies on the storefront.
While purchasing something on Steam, Reddit user Jeeg123 was met with a blurb that stated that PayPal would no longer be available as a payment option for currencies that aren’t Euro, Canadian Dollar, British Pound Sterling, Japanese Yen, Australian Dollar or United States Dollar.
Another Payment Issue for Steam
“In early July 2025, PayPal notified Valve that their acquiring bank for payment transactions in certain currencies was immediately terminating the processing of any transactions related to Steam,” the blurb reads. “This affects Steam purchases using PayPal in currencies other than [the aforementioned currencies]. We hope to offer PayPal as an option for these currencies in the future, but the timeline is uncertain. We are also evaluating adding additional payment methods on Steam for the customers affected by this.”
This has been an ongoing issue for about a month, but this is the first official statement from Steam on the matter.
The exact reason as to why PayPal’s affiliated banks are no longer handling transactions from Steam is unclear, but fans suspect it could be related to the ongoing Visa and Mastercard controversy, wherein payment processors are placing pressure on Steam regarding sexual and ‘offensive’ content.
However, there’s little reason as to why non-major currencies would be targeted while major currencies remain functional, meaning the two issues could be unrelated. There’s also been no statement from PayPal about this issue.
“In the meantime, please use one of our other current payment methods during checkout. If you can’t use any of the available options, you can consider using a Steam Wallet code to add funds to your account,” the blurb advises.
This isn’t the only payment issue that Steam is currently grappling with. As mentioned above, Mastercard has attempted to pressure Steam into removing games that could be damaging to the “Mastercard brand,” which has pushed Steam to de-index some games from the platform which have been deemed “offensive.”
Itch.io is staring down a similar crusade, and has de-indexed games as a result of the pressure. This has drawn ire from creators who feel their games were wrongfully removed.
